Get to know me

Hey! I'm Makis Arsenis. I live in Athens, Greece and I'm a 21 years old undergraduate student at the Electrical and Computer Engineering department of the National Technical University of Athens.

In high school I used to take part in national and international competitions in informatics, having won 2 bronze and 1 silver medal. In such competitions, we are presented with some algorithmic tasks and we are asked to solve them and implement the solution in one of the available programming languages (Pascal, C, C++). I've included some competition/training sites in my links below.
Interests

I'm mainly interested in theoretical computer science. This includes algorithms, data structures, programming languages, cryptography, mathematics concerning computer science etc.

Lately, I've also been doing some web applications development, using technologies such as html, css, javascript, php, mysql. You can see some of the projects I've been working on, in Projects section.

I'm also a supporter and user of free and open source software.

Apart from programming and all the computers stuff, I enjoy watching movies and tv series. These days I am watching The big bang theory (the best geek series!!), Fringe and House M.D..
Projects
- e-blogger
  
  A team project developed as a final assignment for a web developement seminar that we attended. Our team consisted of three members: George Papadimitriou, Kyriakos Axiotis and me.
  
  It's a simple blogging site but with some elements of social networking. For example, in addition to the blogs, each user has a wall where he/she or his/her friends can post text or videos.
  
  Unfortunately, we weren't able to implement everything we had in mind because of our limited time, but some of us are planning to improve e-blogger's user interface and it's overall capabilities (hopefully soon enough ;).

  This was an individual project developed as an asignment for the same web seminar as e-blogger. It lets users upload/organise/download files. Currently, all files are public and everyone can see and download them. But I'm planning on adding an option for making directories private (among other things...).
  
  I know, this project is not a big deal but I learned a great deal about web technologies and web security while working on it. It's also proven useful many many times!!
- rage comics
  
  A collection of rage faces commonly used on the internet.
- grading script
  
  An automated shell script that compiles and runs a program on a set of test cases provided by the user.
